Narration of First Draft (Week 7)

NARRATION

2. The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what’s at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.

/

My persuasive argument thesis is:
Social Network Service, so-called SNS, is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea.

1. What do people already know about my topic?
Everyone knows that how SNS is powerful. Because of development of science and Internet, lots of people use SNS. They acknowledge that SNS has big influence on society, but at the same time they worry about the danger of SNS.

2. What research has already been done about my topic?
http://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=1526243&cid=42171&categoryId=42180
It's an encyclopedia of knowledge and it provide us with accurate information about definition and
features of SNS. And we can know some issue of SNS.

From this web site, we can know the present situation of SNS market and marketing

They are about present status of using Facebook Fan page. They have some good points of Fan page.

3. What are the implications of my argument
If people acknowledge my argument, we can improve our diplomacy with SNS more effectively than before.
When people know the strong point of SNS, effective use of it can happen.

My Narration
At first, it is important to fully understand what diplomacy is and what SNS is. People are often confused that they already know them well. However, to understand the function of SNS in diplomacy, we have to study something more fundamental.
As I said, many people think diplomacy as abstract and stuffy thing. However, their view point is an old one. As time goes by, diplomacy also changed. In the past, there was only traditional diplomacy called hard diplomacy. But, now, there is a new type of diplomacy, which use soft power such as media, cultural exchange and so on. When we consider this new type of diplomacy, we must come up with SNS. SNS is short for Social Network Service and it has high accessibility, various information and is global and universal web-service. The viewpoints of SNS is divided into five. The first one is a standpoint that considers SNS as a tool of computer mediation communication. The second one is about social relation network. The third one is about subject for study of computer utilization. The forth
and last one is considering it as a mean of marketing and the place of exerting influence. And what I want to focus on is the last two viewpoints. As there are lots of viewpoints about SNS, people's attention toward it is also increasing.
According to Makiind, professional company of social media branding, about 2.4 billion people are users of the Internet. Especially in Korea, about 82.5% of Korean use the Internet. Not only the Internet users but also smart phone users are enormous; over 60% of Korean uses smart phone. The important thing is that, according to Ministry of Public Administration and Security, these users usually do exchange activities such as SNS with their smart phone. As we can see, because of development of technology, people started to live in information communicative machines.
After we consider these two concepts, we can think about my argument 'Social Network Service, so-called SNS, is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea.'

Introduction of First Draft (Week 6)

INTRODUCTION

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.

/

  1. Attracts the audience.
  2. Explains the topic.
  3. Declares the thesis of your argument.

How much do you know about diplomacy? Maybe most of people only recall something abstract or stuffy to their mind. For example, when someone asks them "Do you know what diplomats do?", they will answer "Well, it only has to do with government and the Ministry of Foreign Affair. I don't know well but maybe diplomats have diplomatic conferences with other nations' diplomats, right?" How abstract and stuffy. Like this, for the general public, diplomacy seems quite distant. However, after Social Network Service, so-called SNS, appeared, it has largely changed. SNS gradually closes the distance between diplomacy and the general public who originally did not have interests on diplomacy. However, there is also concerns that SNS can effect negatively to diplomacy and interrupt it. So, in this situation, we have to ask "Does SNS really work as a diplomatic tool?", "Is SNS an effective means for Korean diplomacy?".

Classical Argument Outline (Week 3)

 Classical argument outline

/

Social network service, so-called SNS

is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea.

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.
I will start by throwing some questions that can grab people's attention. With these questions, I will point out that many people don't know well about diplomacy and that SNS can solve the problem of ignorance. I will end with my thesis, "Social Network Service is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea."

2. The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what’s at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.
For my persuasive essay, I need some basic background information. I can divide them into two category. First one is 'diplomacy of Korea' and the other is 'SNS'First I will explain what diplomacy is, what kind of diplomacy exists and the problem of diplomacy in Korea. Second, I will explain what SNS is, and its various function.

3. The confirmation, which lays out in a logical order (usually strongest to weakest or most obvious to most subtle) the claims that support the thesis, providing evidence for each claim.
SNS has high accessibility, various information and is global and universal web-service. And these strong points make SNS as an effective tool for diplomacy. Then how does it help diplomacy?
1. People can easily access to SNS, so everyone can know what diplomats and diplomatic organization are doing.
 2. SNS can provide various information related to diplomacy  to those who are interested in it.
 3. In the case of foreigner, they can learn Korean culture easily through SNS.      /We can easily introduce our culture to foreigners.

4. The refutation and concession, which looks at opposing viewpoints to the writer’s claims, anticipating objections from the audience, and allowing as much of the opposing viewpoints as possible without weakening the thesis.
Some people are worrying because they think that SNS provide some inaccurate SNS and can give negative image of Korea to foreigners. However, it is easy to solve. I will explain how to solve this worrying with some practical examples.

5. The summation, which provides a strong conclusion, amplifying the force of the argument,  and showing the readers that this solution is the best at meeting the circumstances.
It is not a good choice to get rid of SNS from diplomacy. Potentiality of diplomacy when using SNS, is large. If people effectively reflect strong points of SNS and solve the wrong point of SNS, we can enhance our national image and solve the problem of diplomacy.I will emphasis the effectiveness of using SNS.

Articulation of my argument (Week 3)

 Articulation of my argument

/

Social network service, so-called SNS

is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea.

1) My argument
I want to argue that social network service, so-called SNS is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea.
Some people think SNS as negative thing that can provide inaccurate information to people. Some people think
it as positive tool that can be easily accessed by people. I want to persuade the former. I believe that SNS
can be an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea with its strong points.

2) How I found my argument
I have watched some Youtube video about diplomacy before and I realized that the image of diplomacy is not that good for general people.
With this experience I decided my first research question; What do people think about diplomacy of Korea? Do they really know what diplomats do? Most of people can easily sympathize with these questions. Especially in the past, most of people didn't have any means or tools to know diplomacy easily.
However, after researching, I found that there are so many information sources from SNS. And I thought that this can help people to know and be familiar to diplomacy. Also, after researching about what is the definition, function, history and features of SNS, I could assure that SNS is an effective tool for diplomacy.

3) New research questions
I have several things that I want to know more.
a) The history of SNS marketing/SNS promotion.
b) Examples of Soft power which is used by public diplomacy

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler
My argument has a connection to the Harvard Sampler. My argument is about SNS, which is the result of development of information&communication and technology. With these development, we became to be in the middle of an information revolution.
According to "The Internet and Hieronymus Bosch: Fear, Protection, and Liberty in Cyberspace" in Harvard Sampler, the writer is worrying about conflicts between liberating and limiting. My argument, social network service is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea, is also controversial because of this problem. About this controversy, I think liberty is much more than limitation. So, I persuade opponents to think that SNS is an effective tool for diplomacy of Korea.

My Topic:
Social Network Service (SNS) is an effective tool for diplomacy.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want to find what is the definition, function, history and features of SNS. Also, I think the issue about SNS is important. Among these, the original purpose and good points of SNS can support my argument, I think.
I want to know how SNS is used for marketing and actual example of them.

Notes:
  1. Concept of SNS : SNS is short for Social Network Service. It is a service based on World Wide Web. Also it is dramatically improved over more than ten years and socially and academically became a big object of attention.
  2. Definition of it can be different depending on views, but commonly it is related to the ability to form and maintain the personal relationship, structure of relational net, wave of relational net, information exchange and so on.
  3. It is not a phenomenon in a certain nation like US, but global and universial phenomenon.
  4. Without SNS, there is no marketing service provider centered
  5. Service provider centered ----> Service "user" centered
  6. Sixty nine percents of the Internet users are SNS users.
  7. Fan Page (of Facebook) made by "Fan".
  8. "Talk to me. Then I will forget. Show me. Then maybe I will remember. Make me participated in. Then I will understand it."
    Final Thoughts:
These information that I searched is enough to support my opinion that SNS is an effective tool for diplomacy. There is not only practical examples that how SNS is used for diplomacy(Research 1) but also principles of SNS and SNS marketing(Research 2).
With these principles, I can theorize my opinion.

    My Topic:
Social Network Service (SNS) is an effective tool for diplomacy.

What I hope to learn from this source:
I want to know how SNS is used for marketing and actual example of them.
Also people's thought about them is also important.

    Notes: Examples
The accessibility is high and everyone can easily enjoy these pages.
Videos from Youtube, for example, also can be good information for this topic.
    1. Mofa (https://www.facebook.com/mofakr.kr?fref=ts)
    2. Culture Affairs Bureau of Mofa (https://www.facebook.com/MOFAculture?fref=ts)

    5. Korea Brand Forum (https://www.facebook.com/groups/koreabrand/?fref=ts)
    6. Youtube videos related to diplomacy and Korean culture.
All these web sites provide lots of information to public and the information is accurate.
Not only this, we can experience various culture indirectly.

    Final Thoughts:
There are so many information sources from SNS that I can't record them all on my blog page. The notes that I recorded is just a part of them.
And I think that I need more researching. I will research something theoretical such as definition and strong points of SNS or some principles of SNS marketing.

    Research Proposal (Week 2)

     Research Proposal

    /

    What is my current topic?

'Social network service, so-called SNS is a effective tool for diplomacy?'
I want to research about this topic and my argument is that 'Yes, it is.'
More details are written on the second question's answer.

    What are my guiding questions?

How SNS can attract people's attention? Now what are they doing for this? Before SNS appeared, what was the image of diplomacy? What kind of effects do SNS have?
I want to research focusing on these questions.

    What are my current thoughts?

The image of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, so-called MOFAT was not that good.
People doesn't know much about what diplomats did and they are negative to MOFAT.
As a Facebook user, I know there are a lot of Facebook pages related to diplomacy. For example, Mofa, Korean Cultural Center, Culture Affairs Bureau of Mofa, Development Cooperation Bureau of Mofa, Korea Brand Forum and so on. In addition, the great amount of people can access to these pages. That's the good point of SNS. So with these good points, I want to persuade people that it is effective to attract people's attentions toward diplomacy by using social network service.

    What is the opposition?

They may argue about the uncertainty of the information because not only experts but also normal people can manage and administer SNS like Facebook Page. In addition, there could be some risks that foreigners can have negative view by SNS.
And of course there are other ways to help diplomacy but nowadays, SNS is a big and effective tool for diplomacy.
